Sittwe is a port city and the capital of the Rakhine State, which lies on the peninsula. It has a tropical monsoon climate, said to be best travelled during its dryer months of December to April. The U archaeological park, is located a short journey up the Kaladan River and is home to the ancient city and a number of temple ruins, depicting its once supreme importance. Karen New Year
This national holiday is of particular important to the Karen people, and its celebration is accompanied by ethnic dancing and sporting activities such as traditional boxing matches. The boxing can be seen in the suburb of Innsein, in northwest Yangon, home to the capital’s largest Karen community.
